We all have the occasional night when we find it hard to drop off. Perhaps there are plans whirling around in our brains keeping us awake, we're excited about something or are simply too wired to drop off.
When sleepless nights are few and far between it doesn't take long to bounce back and catch up on lost sleep, but if you're struggling night after night, then it could be time to identify the culprit, which could turn out to be your mattress!
How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?
Did you know that sleep experts recommend changing your mattress roughly every 7-10 years?
There are exceptions though, cheap mattresses or those that have received a lot of heavy use may need replacing even before the 7 year mark, whilst a high-quality mattress that has received little use might easily last substantially longer than 10 years.
So how can you tell if it's time to ditch your old mattress and invest in something new?

1. Your mattress feels lumpy and bumpy
The most obvious sign of a failing mattress is if it feels lumpy or bumpy. Over time coils can fail, leading to lumps that in turn result in a less than ideal sleeping surface.
So give your bed the once over and if there are bumps and lumps where there shouldn't be, it's time to ditch it!
2. You struggle to find a comfortable sleeping position
If you spend ages tossing and turning before you drop off, then your mattress could be to blame. It might be that it's too hard or soft for you, or that over time it has become less supportive and so feels less comfortable.
If this is the case, now might be a good time to consider investing in something new.
3. There are dips and indents in the mattress
With continued use night after night, mattresses can develop indents and the position that you sleep in can often become evident by looking at your mattress.
Even a great mattress that's over 10 years old may start to show signs of age and will start to dip a little in the areas that have been compressed by your body weight most frequently.
If you can make out a dip, or if you move to the centre or edge of the bed and the mattress feels different and more supportive there, it's probably time for an upgrade.
4. You've added a mattress topper and still aren't comfy at night
As your mattress has aged, you might have tried to compensate and make it more comfortable by splashing out on a thick padded or memory foam mattress topper.
If you're still not comfortable in bed even after the addition of a mattress topper though, it's definitely the underlying mattress that's to blame.
5. Your bed squeaks or makes a noise when you turn over
If you have a bed frame, particularly a metal bed frame, the first thing to check is that your frame isn't loose, so check all the screws first, as loose screws and bolts can lead to squeaking.
More often than not though, the squeaking noise will be coming from the mattress itself. Old bed springs or springs that have failed, lose their springiness and can cause an irritating squeaking noise.
Hearing a squeak every time you get in or out of bed or change position during the night is a surefire way to disturbed sleep. The failed springs are also much less likely to do a good job of supporting you as you sleep, so you face a double whammy of sleep disturbance, meaning it's definitely time to invest in a new mattress.
